A trader made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was publicly declared, raising questions about whether someone profited from non-public details of American actions.

Market Movement in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the end of January increased in the time leading up to Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the president had been seized.

One account, which became a member in December and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a starting bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Platform data shows that users put the odds of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet these probabilities had jumped to eleven percent by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the first hours of January 3rd, indicating a sudden change in positions right before the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," said a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other traders also earned significant sums from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Grows

Elected officials are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation presented on Monday seeks to ban federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have surged in popularity in recent years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports outcomes to political events.

Prediction markets were examined under the previous administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Insider trading is illegal in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the prediction market industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
