A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
