Medvedev, the former major winner, had lost his previous six championship matches, comprising in Halle in the past months.

The player's retrieving strategy and frequent reactions on the playing surface had led commentators to doubt if his ability to perform at the top level was over.

However the player has implemented adjustments in the past month, making an effort to advance forward and perform positively, backed up by an better service.

He came back from a disadvantage in the opening set against the challenging Frenchman, winning four of the final five games to go ahead.

The competitors exchanged breaks in the second set before the challenger, striving for his first tour title, seized the initiative to force a decider.

Moutet saved four initial opportunities in a close final set before the Russian broke to that score to secure the win.

Suitably, Medvedev earned the win with a shot at the net, with the Frenchman failing to manage a shot after over two and a half hours.
