During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” the metropolis, ushering in “a different age” and an ambitious start to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Figure

The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Dynamics

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
